Storage & Care
Sterling and silverplate will tarnish due to oxidation when they come in contact with sulfur in the air. Tarnish formation is accelerated in a humid environment. Proper care and storage of your silver will prevent it from being damaged. Keeping and maintaining silver is not at all a difficult task. Here are a few easy steps that will help you when taking care of your silver.
- Wipe sterling silver and silverplate with a soft fabric when cleaning. Buffing with a soft fabric will polish the silver to a shine. Using a polishing cloth or spray polish will aid in removing tarnish.
- For stubborn tarnish, use a very soft bristled children's toothbrush or horsehair silver brush. The bristles on the brush will clean tarnish from crevices that a cloth cannot reach. Using a spray polish in addition to a soft brush will aid in removing tarnish. We do not recommend using an abrasive polish with a brush as it may damage your silver.
- Do not use toothpaste as a silver polish when cleaning your silver as it is highly abrasive and may scratch the surface.
- Store your sterling silver and silverplate in sealed poly bags or flannel bags and keep them out of direct sun light. You can also wrap your silver in green tinted softcloth when not in use. This will help prevent silver from tarnishing due to oxidation.
Following these guidelines will keep your silver looking beautiful so that it may be cherished for generations to come.
